Sony has finally joined its camera rivals in releasing desktop software that allows you to use (some) of its cameras as high-quality webcams, without having accessories like video capture cards.

The new Imaging Edge Webcam app is currently Windows-only and wishes you to be running Windows 10 64-bit. We’ve asked Sony if it is also being developed for Macs and can update this story once we hear back.

If you’ve got a Windows machine, though, then you ought to now be ready to use your Sony camera to either intensify your video conferencing game or live stream.

We say ‘should’ because the Imaging Edge Webcam app naturally isn’t compatible with every single Sony camera, though the initial list (see below) is pretty comprehensive.

Most desktop Sony camera Alphas are also supported – currently this lineup includes full-frame models like the Sony A7R IV, Sony A7 III and Sony A7S III, respectively as well as APS-C cameras like the Sony A6600 and Sony 360 A6100. Compact videos are increasingly welcome now in the webcam marketplace too, with the Sony ZV-1 adding webcam skills to enhance their highly rated web video resume. One notable industry absentee, though, is buying the Sony A6000, which is a huge disappointment because it’s a highly accurate digital mirrorless camera that we reckon is still probably one of the best quality beginner cameras you can buy right now, despite it being labeled age.

Still, if you’ve uses only a Windows 1 PC that’s using Windows 10 64-bit, notation plus one of the methods listed above, then the calculation should be simplified relatively straightforward.

Sony has listed several instructions on the photo Imaging micro Edge Webcam application suite, as there are quite many differences depending on instructions which are available have. You users also need to install a firmware update.

But developers recommend that you’ll be able to use the camera’s analog autofocus and powers when manually livestreaming or making digital video playback, even if audio can normally only be controlled by your controller or an operator mic.

You then can connect the camera to all your PC via USB cable, launch your own portable video conferencing device and display your camera as the source. Once that’s done editing you apparently need to use digital Imaging Edge or Webcam cameras, switch your camera back off and on again, then restart the normal process of video conferencing software.

So yes, slightly fiddly powder, is a lot cheaper and simple than using an optical electron capture card. That has said, although there are still some benefits to users using newer devices like mac Elgato Cam micro Link 4K, particularly especially if you own a custom Mac controller or a device maker that uses isn’t controls automatically by Imaging Edge software webcam.
